I think that digital storytelling can be used in education by relating worldly events on a much smaller scale. I believe that the images that can be used in digital storytelling can only add to a story, and allow the reader to become more absorbed by it. I think that the creativity of the storyteller can be shown through different artistic representations, whether they be photographs, videos, or audio selections. Each one of those strikes a different part of a persons' psyche, and can allow the reader to experience the story on multiple levels.
As far as assessing digital storytelling, I think that the first thing that is needed would be a story that the storyteller is passionate about. If there is no feeling in the telling of the story, what is the point in relaying it to someone else? I think that when a person is truly passionate about the story, it shows through, and it allows the readers to become engulfed in it, too. This causes a chain link of events that allows the story's ideas and passions to reach the masses.
I agree with you that "creativity of the storyteller can be shown through different artistic representations." Take our current project for example. We all had the same assignment and we all took that concept and created vastly different digital stories. I value digital storytelling for its ability to showcase student creativity. Digital stories can be as diverse as the students in the group. As a teacher it allows you to see the creative force within your students and you can watch how it matures during the course of a school year.
ReplyDeleteI really like the way you explain your take on digital storytelling and how much it can add to a story. When students create a story through pen and paper or typed up on a computer, it does not do justice to much of what the student really wants to convey. The addition of a digital story goes a long way to truly displaying what the author of the story had intended. There is so much creativity in our students that is underutilized, and I think the digital story is a great way of allow the students a form of creative expression.
ReplyDeleteSo true in that being passionate behind something will only add to it's effectiveness. I think allowing CHOICE in digital story projects for students will help bring this out - so they don't feel like they have to tell a story about something they aren't interested in. Any way you can create choice in assignments or projects to allow students to show they know the information will be useful!
ReplyDeleteThis reminds me that in teaching our first response is not always the wisest, especially when including our emotions in the process. You have to do things to win difficult students over that are sometimes outside of the box.
